Car Museum

Swiss Museum of Transport

Luzern • Switzerland

Switzerland's most-visited museum, on Lake Lucerne. Explore road, rail, air and water transport, from Swiss-built classic cars to a Formula 1 simulator.

About the venue

A car park that puts on a show.

A lift reaches into a high-bay rack holding 80 vehicles, hoists one out and sets it on a stage in front of you. That is the Car Theatre, and it is only one corner of the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne.

Known locally as the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz, the museum opened on 1 July 1959 and is Switzerland's most-visited museum, with more than a million admissions a year across around 20,000 m² of exhibition space on the shore of Lake Lucerne. It covers road, rail, air and water transport, space travel, cableways, tourism and energy.

For car people, the Road Transport hall is the main event. It tells the story of Swiss automobile history, including the Monteverdi brand, alongside Formula 1 exhibits, a Formula 1 simulator, a crash test exhibit and a VR bike. Special exhibitions add to it: 100 Years of Ducati opened in full at the end of July 2026, and Red Bull World of Racing comes with pit stop challenges.

Beyond the halls are a planetarium, the Filmtheatre with the largest permanently installed screen in Switzerland, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure and the Hans Erni Museum. Outside, historic aircraft and trains stand next to playgrounds.

The museum is open 365 days a year. The Luzern Verkehrshaus stop is eight minutes by train from Lucerne station, and buses and lake boats also stop at the museum.

Yes. Verkehrshaus der Schweiz is the museum's German name; in English it is the Swiss Museum of Transport. Both refer to the museum at Haldenstrasse 44 in Lucerne, which opened on 1 July 1959.
The Road Transport hall covers Swiss automobile history, including Monteverdi, plus Formula 1 exhibits, a Formula 1 simulator, a crash test exhibit and the Car Theatre with its 80-vehicle display rack. Special exhibitions currently include 100 Years of Ducati and Red Bull World of Racing.
The Car Theatre is the Road Transport hall's display warehouse: a high-bay rack holding 80 vehicles from different eras. A lift hoists individual vehicles out of the rack and presents them on a stage, so you can see far more cars than would fit on the hall floor.
Very. More than 3,000 school classes visit every year, the Road Transport hall has a car garage play area for children, and the outdoor area has playgrounds next to historic aircraft and trains.
