Hockenheimring

Hockenheim • Germany

Historic Formula 1 circuit in the Rhine Valley. Drive it on track days and Tourist Rides, ride a race taxi or watch DTM from the grandstands.

About the venue

37 Grands Prix. Now it's your turn.

Formula 1 drivers braked from around 330 km/h to 70 km/h for the Spitzkehre hairpin. At the Hockenheimring, you can take the same corner yourself.

Opened in 1932 in the Rhine Valley, the Hockenheimring hosted 37 Formula 1 Grands Prix between 1970 and 2019. Hermann Tilke redesigned the circuit in 2002: today's 4.574 km Grand Prix layout packs 17 corners into a lap that ends in the Motodrom, the stadium section framed by grandstands. On big race weekends the venue holds up to 120,000 spectators, and its FIA Grade 1 licence keeps it ready for the highest level of racing.

On Tourist Rides (Touristenfahrten) days, you bring your own car and drive the circuit in timed sessions. Independent organisers run track days and driver training through most of the season, and Race'n'Roll experiences put you behind the wheel of a Porsche, Lamborghini or Ferrari with an instructor alongside. Prefer the passenger seat? A professional driver takes you for three race taxi laps in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup or Mercedes-AMG GT S.

On the same site, the Porsche Experience Center Hockenheimring adds a 2.8 km handling track and an off-road course. Beneath the main grandstand, the Welcome Center opens daily with a fan shop, coffee bar and racing simulator. It is also the starting point for Insider Tours of the paddock and podium, and for e-kart tours of the Grand Prix circuit.

Across the season, the Hockenheimring hosts the DTM season finale, ADAC Hockenheim Historic, the NitrOlympX drag racing festival, the International GT Open and Formula Student Germany, plus concerts and festivals. It sits beside the A6 and A61 motorways, about 25 km from Mannheim and Heidelberg and an hour by car from Frankfurt Airport.

Frequently Questions People Ask

Do you have any questions?

Yes. On selected Tourist Rides (Touristenfahrten) dates, the Hockenheimring opens the track to private cars in timed sessions, with full-day and evening editions. Tickets are sold only through the circuit's online ticket shop, and your car must meet the published Tourist Rides conditions. For more time on track, independent organisers run track days and driver training throughout the season.
Yes. On selected dates, professional drivers take passengers for three laps of the Grand Prix circuit in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup or a Mercedes-AMG GT S. Allow about an hour including registration and briefing. Helmets are provided and the minimum age is 18. To drive as well as ride, Race'n'Roll experiences combine instructor-led laps at the wheel with passenger laps, in cars from a Porsche Cayman to a Ferrari F8 (minimum age 21).
Yes. The Welcome Center beneath the main grandstand is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, with a fan shop, coffee bar and racing simulator. From there you can reach the visitor grandstand overlooking the start-finish straight, except on ticketed event days and during exclusive track hire. Hours can change in winter and around major events, so check before you travel.
Yes. The Insider Tour (75 to 90 minutes, in German) covers the south and east grandstands, the paddock and a photo on the winner's podium. On the Track Tour you follow a guide around the circuit in your own vehicle, and the e-kart tour adds two laps of the Grand Prix circuit in an electric kart (minimum age 14). All tours start at the Welcome Center; book the Insider Tour in advance.
Regular highlights include ADAC Hockenheim Historic – Das Jim Clark Revival in spring, the NitrOlympX drag racing festival and Formula Student Germany in August, and the DTM season finale in October. The VETERAMA classic car market, the International GT Open, club races, car meets, concerts and festivals fill the rest of the calendar. Dates change every year, so check the official event calendar.
Not at the moment. The Hockenheimring hosted 37 Formula 1 races between 1970 and 2019; the last, a rain-hit German Grand Prix, was won by Max Verstappen. Formula 1 and the circuit have discussed a return, but as of autumn 2026 no date has been confirmed. The circuit still holds an FIA Grade 1 licence, the level required to host Formula 1.
The Grand Prix circuit measures 4.574 km, with 17 corners (6 left, 11 right) and a track width of 12 to 18 metres. Hermann Tilke designed the current layout in 2002, replacing the previous 6.8 km circuit and its long straights through the forest. The race lap record is 1:13.780, set by Kimi Räikkönen in a McLaren in 2004.
Yes. The Porsche Experience Center Hockenheimring opened in 2019 on the circuit site, with a 2.8 km handling track, driving dynamics areas, a 5,200 m² off-road course and a café and restaurant overlooking the track. Porsche runs driving programmes there, and on selected dates they move onto the Grand Prix circuit.
By car, leave the A6 at exit 29 (Schwetzingen/Hockenheim) or the A61 at exit 64 (Hockenheim) and follow the signs. Parking is free between 06:00 and 20:00. Mannheim and Heidelberg are about 25 km away, Frankfurt Airport around 90 km and Zurich roughly 3.5 hours by car. Hockenheim station is about a 30-minute walk, with shuttle buses on major event days.
The on-site hotel sits directly on the start-finish straight, and camping is available at major events. For more choice, Hockenheim, Schwetzingen, Speyer, Heidelberg and Mannheim are all within about 25 km.
